Samsung already announced plans to bring Galaxy AI to Galaxy S phones and foldable devices last year, but only recently has it been announced when the update will be rolled out. The publication is the latest sign that phone makers are looking at generative AI—or AI that can create content after being trained on data—as a key factor in smartphone development.

Apart from the aforementioned phones, the update will also reach the Wi-Fi versions of the Galaxy Tab S9, S9 Plus, and S9 Ultra this week. Samsung says One UI 6.1 will be available on devices sold through its retail channel as well as Best Buy, Amazon, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cello, and Verizon.

Galaxy AI is an umbrella term for many of the software features introduced in the Galaxy S24 series. These features include Circle to Search, which allows you to start a Google search by circling the screen with your finger for a specific item or product. There's live translation, which translates phone conversations in real time, along with chat support for translating text conversations or rewriting text into different accents before sending.

a main focus of Galaxy AI. For example, generative editing lets you manipulate or delete objects in photos, while instant slow-motion lets you preview clips in slow motion by holding your finger over the video.

But PhotoAmbient Wallpaper, a feature that uses AI to change your wallpaper based on time and weather, is exclusive to the Galaxy S24 series, according to a Samsung representative.

Samsung's update comes at a time when artificial intelligence is expected to play a major role in the development of smartphones. International Data Corporation, which monitors the mobile market, estimates that 170 million next-generation AI smartphones will ship in 2024, accounting for about 15 percent of total shipments. According to Bloomberg, Apple is also expected to bring new general AI features to the iPhone with iOS 18, the next major  update.

Samsung's new version launch date

Samsung's decision to bring Galaxy AI to existing phones is obvious. This suggests that the company is more interested in getting Galaxy AI to as many people as possible than using AI to force buyers to upgrade.

An earlier version of this story headline misstated the launch date of Samsung's One UI 6.1 update. The update will be released on March 28.
